European Commercial Lock

Basic Locking Mechanism
When you turn a key in a commercial mortise lock, several mechanical processes occur simultaneously. The key aligns the pin tumblers within the cylinder, allowing the cylinder plug to rotate. This rotation activates a cam or tailpiece connected to the lock body's internal mechanisms.
The lock body contains a series of levers and connecting rods that translate the cylinder's rotation into movement of the latch bolt or deadbolt. Depending on the lock's function, turning the key may retract the latch bolt, extend or retract the deadbolt, or both.

Handle and Lever Operation
The handles or levers on european commercial locks connect to the lock body through a spindle mechanism. When you press down on a lever handle, it rotates the spindle, which activates internal components that retract the latch bolt, allowing the door to open.
However, the handle operation is controlled by the lock's internal mechanisms. If the lock is in a secured state, the handles may be disconnected from the latch bolt mechanism, preventing unauthorized entry even if someone attempts to force the handle.

Function-Specific Operations
European commercial locks are manufactured in various functions, each designed for specific security and operational requirements. A classroom function lock, for example, allows the inside handle to always retract the latch bolt while the outside handle is controlled by the key cylinder.
Office function locks operate differently, with both handles normally active to retract the latch bolt unless specifically locked by key operation. Storeroom function locks keep the outside handle continuously inactive, requiring a key for every entry while allowing free egress from inside.
